Short-run custom pouches: what affects price and minimum order?
“What does a custom pouch cost?” has no useful answer without a specification. Two bags that look alike may need different materials, closures and tests. This guide organizes the questions behind a short-run quote so you can compare feasible proposals, not just low unit prices.

Define the pack you actually need
Size, fill capacity, gusset, zipper, valve, film and barrier affect material and converting. The product and target shelf life guide those choices. Ask whether a lower-cost alternative still meets the important technical requirements rather than merely looking similar.
Separate total quantity from quantity per artwork
If a brand asks for 3,000 pouches in three designs, the proposal should say whether that means 1,000 of each or another mix. Digital printing avoids new plates for each image change, but does not remove every artwork, proofing, lamination, cutting or pouch-making cost. Shared size and material can help a design family; the actual grouping depends on the supplier.
- State how many designs you need and units per design.
- Say whether dimensions, structure and closure are shared.
- Separate a new graphic version from a physical pouch change.
Look beyond unit price
Compare the total cost of buying, storing and eventually replacing inventory. For a line still in testing, overbuying one version ties up cash; for a stable SKU, more volume or flexography may change the economics. Request separate timing for approval, printing, conversion and shipping, plus the cost of a repeat order.
Ask for comparable proposals
Give each supplier the same product, dimensions, quantity per SKU, destination, artwork status and target date. Ask what is included, what still needs testing and what depends on capacity. If a number seems unusually attractive, check whether it excludes closure, material, plates, proofing, freight or applicable taxes. The useful minimum is the one for your structure and process, not a universal promotional number.
Send us your product, approximate size, quantity per design and destination. If barrier, closure or final artwork are unknown, we can start with those questions before confirming a minimum or price.
